SEO for Bespoke Tech Stacks

Next.js and Angular do not suit every project. Astro works well for content sites with a few interactive pieces. Nuxt fits teams that already write Vue. Remix handles nested route data neatly, and Hydrogen is the natural choice for headless Shopify. When none of those fit, we go further with options such as Hono on Cloudflare Workers, SvelteKit or Deno Fresh, picked by how your data is shaped and how pages need to render.

Islands only
Our approach. pages start with no JavaScript and add interaction only where it is used

  • Stack: Custom Development → Custom Stack
  • Rendering: everything rendered in the browser out of the box, each route assigned SSR, SSG or ISR once we have built it

Focus areas

Where Custom Stack builds win or lose in search

Speed, structured data and scale come up on every platform we work with. The code panels are simplified examples of what we check and change.

The stack follows the data shape

Some projects are better served by neither Next nor Angular. A content site with a handful of interactive widgets needs islands and no full React runtime. A team fluent in Vue moves faster on Nuxt than on something new to them. Headless Shopify has a clear default in Hydrogen. We choose based on your data, your rendering needs and the people who will maintain it.

Islands, where they earn it

Content-heavy pages are mostly static with a few interactive parts. An islands architecture sends plain HTML for the static bulk and hydrates only the interactive pieces, so a long article costs very little JavaScript. For app-like screens where components share state in the browser, islands are a poor match, and telling those cases apart is the job.

Edge where latency is the product

Rendering at the edge pays off when visitors are spread out, say from St. John’s to Victoria and beyond, and server response time is the bottleneck. The edge runtime is different from Node, though. Packages that expect a filesystem or native modules will fail there, so we check the dependency tree before choosing the edge.

About this stack

Building on Custom Stack with CreateITivity

On a Custom Stack project, our Custom Development developers and SEO leads plan the build together, so search needs shape the architecture from the start. We design around the framework's quirks early and hand over code your own team can run and extend.

  • Custom Stack developers and SEO leads plan the build together
  • All code lands in your repository, with no licence fees to us
  • Part of our wider Custom Development service
  • Every build ends with a handover and written documentation
How the work runs

How we work

Steps in a Custom Stack project

Projects move through the same stages in order. You can see progress at each one through regular written updates.

  1. Score the candidates

    $ stack decide --score

    A shortlist of frameworks is rated on data shape, rendering needs, team skills and personalization, and we note why the others were ruled out.

  2. Prototype the two finalists

    $ bench --route=/p/[slug]

    Both finalists get a real route built with real data. Numbers from a build you can run yourself are worth more than anything in a blog post.

  3. Pin the render contract

    $ cat render-contract.md

    A file in the repository lists which routes are static, which run at the edge and which need Node, so later changes are deliberate.

  4. Migrate with both sites live

    $ redirects verify --against=sitemap

    Content moves into the headless CMS, canonicals and 301s are mapped, and the old site keeps serving traffic until rankings settle on the new one.

FAQs

Custom Stack questions we hear often

Straight answers to what Canadian clients ask us before they commit.

How do you choose a framework for us?
We look at your data first, then how pages must render, then who will maintain the code. A content site with a few widgets suits islands better than a full client runtime. A team that knows Vue will ship sooner on Nuxt. Headless Shopify points to Hydrogen. We narrow it to two options and build a real route in each before deciding, since your own test results beat published benchmarks.
Is a custom stack riskier than Next or Angular?
It carries more risk when picked because it is new and less when picked because it fits. Most of the risk sits in hiring and handover. To manage it we keep a render contract in the repository, listing static, edge and Node routes, and we hand over documentation that a team unfamiliar with the build can follow.
When does an islands architecture make sense?
When a page is mostly static with a few interactive parts, which describes nearly every content site. The static portion ships as HTML and only the interactive islands hydrate, keeping JavaScript very low even on long pages. For app-style screens where components share browser state, islands work against you.
What fails when rendering moves to the edge?
Code that expects Node. Edge runtimes have no filesystem and no native modules, so any dependency relying on them breaks. We audit the dependency tree for this before committing to the edge. The check takes little time, and finding out later costs a lot more.
