Shopify Stores Set Up for Search

Shopify started in Ottawa, and a lot of Canadian merchants sell on it. Stores tend to lose search visibility in three ways: filter URLs that waste crawl budget, thin product markup and heavy Liquid templates. CreateITivity fixes each one so product and collection pages load fast and get understood by search engines.

What does CreateITivity do on Shopify?

Shopify started in Ottawa, and a lot of Canadian merchants sell on it. Stores tend to lose search visibility in three ways: filter URLs that waste crawl budget, thin product markup and heavy Liquid templates. CreateITivity fixes each one so product and collection pages load fast and get understood by search engines.

  • Stack: Shopify

Focus areas

Three areas we work on in Shopify

Speed, structured data and scale come up on every platform we work with. The code panels are simplified examples of what we check and change.

Speed

Every app you install can add a script to every page. We remove the apps you no longer need, rewrite Liquid sections so secondary code loads after the product is visible and test on mid-range phones, since most store browsing now happens on mobile.

Schema

Themes generally output a Product node and stop there. Offer details in CAD, review ratings, brand and breadcrumb links are often missing or malformed. We write the full graph as Liquid snippets and validate each product template before it ships.

Scale

Filters on collection pages create parameter URLs, and combinations multiply fast until one product appears under a huge number of addresses. We decide which of those deserve crawling, point the rest to a canonical and keep internal search out of the index.

About this stack

What CreateITivity brings to a Shopify site

Shopify makes selling easy and hides SEO problems until growth stalls. By then a store has usually piled up thousands of variant and filter URLs, product markup that stops at the basics, and a theme carrying scripts from apps that were uninstalled long ago. We rebuild from the theme outward. That means a Liquid theme written for Core Web Vitals, a linked Product, Offer, AggregateRating and Breadcrumb graph, hreflang that follows your Shopify Markets setup, and crawl rules set through robots.txt and canonicals. For Canadian sellers we also handle the details that local shoppers notice: prices and Shopify Payments in CAD, GST, HST and PST set correctly by province, Canada Post rates at checkout and an English and French storefront when you sell into Québec.

  • Experienced Shopify developers do the hands-on work
  • Changes arrive as reviewable pull requests in your own accounts
  • Built with the platform’s own tools wherever possible, so fewer add-ons to pay for
  • Moving to or from Shopify comes with a redirect plan that protects search traffic
How the work runs

How we work

From first crawl to launch on Shopify

Projects move through the same stages in order. You can see progress at each one through regular written updates.

  1. Store Review

    $ shopify audit --depth=full

    We crawl the store, list each installed app, read the Liquid templates, map which filter URLs are indexable, validate markup and record mobile vitals.

  2. Theme Rewrite

    $ theme push --refactor

    The Liquid theme is rebuilt with leftover app code removed, secondary scripts deferred, product markup rendered on the server and images served at sensible sizes.

  3. Product Markup

    $ schema validate --pdp=all

    Liquid snippets add linked Product, Offer, AggregateRating, Brand and Breadcrumb JSON-LD to each product page, with prices in the currency the shopper sees.

  4. Crawl Rules

    $ crawl-budget reclaim

    We rewrite robots.txt, set canonicals for variants and filters, noindex the low-value tail, clean the sitemap and resubmit it in Search Console.

  5. Launch and Watch

    $ deploy --theme=production

    The theme is compared on a preview, published, then tracked with field vitals, weekly Lighthouse runs and Search Console alerts sent to your team.

FAQs

Shopify questions we hear often

Straight answers to what Canadian clients ask us before they commit.

Do we have to replace our theme?
Only when the review says so. Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn can usually be cleaned up and kept. Older themes, or ones from vendors that bundle their own tracking and upsell scripts, are normally cheaper to replace with a lean build based on Dawn.
Can you build a headless Shopify store with Hydrogen?
Yes, as part of Enterprise. Shopify keeps running orders, inventory and payments while a Hydrogen front end handles rendering and caching. You get full control over how pages are built and very fast first loads.
What do you do about apps that slow the store down?
We start by listing every app with the weight it adds and any SEO side effects. Popups and upsell apps often become native Liquid sections. Overlapping review tools get merged into one. Chat widgets load later. An app stays only if it pays for its weight.
Can you set up Shopify Markets for selling outside Canada?
Yes. We configure hreflang for each market, keep markup currency matched to what the shopper sees, check market-level pricing and set up a Search Console property per market. A common setup for Canadian brands is CAD at home, USD for the United States and a French storefront for Québec. This is included in Production.
Will cleaning up filter URLs cost us long-tail traffic?
This is the worry we hear most. Before changing anything we find every variant or filter URL that currently ranks, assign it a canonical, redirect what needs redirecting and fold its signals into the main product or collection page. Search engines then spend their crawl on the pages you actually want found.
Can you move our store off Shopify?
Yes. We handle moves to Hydrogen, WooCommerce or a custom Next.js storefront. The work covers exporting product data, a URL map, a 301 plan and a careful switch of the Search Console property so rankings follow the store.
Which Shopify limits should we design around?
Product and collection pages live under fixed /products/ and /collections/ paths, and changing that takes a headless build. Checkout customization is limited, with Shopify Plus offering the most room through Checkout Extensibility. Blog and page URLs are flexible. Because we know these constraints going in, collections and navigation get planned around them from the start.
Who owns the store and the theme code?
You do, along with all product data. We work in your store through staff or collaborator accounts, with no ownership transfer and no proprietary tooling. The Liquid we write sits in your theme files, and any Shopify developer can pick it up later.
How is a Shopify project priced and scheduled?
The Starter review has a fixed fee. Production work covering the theme, product markup and crawl rules is scoped after discovery, and Enterprise projects with Hydrogen or several Markets take longer again. You receive a written estimate in CAD, with the schedule attached, before agreeing to anything larger.
Do you work with Shopify Plus checkout features?
Yes. On Plus, Checkout Extensibility lets us add trust messaging and other elements to checkout steps that standard Liquid cannot reach. We also send checkout events to GA4 or Tag Manager so you can see where buyers drop off.
Can you handle Canadian taxes, shipping and French-language requirements?
Yes. We configure GST, HST, PST and QST for the provinces you ship to, connect Canada Post and other carrier rates, and set up Shopify Payments in CAD. If you sell to Québec customers we build a full French storefront with Translate & Adapt or a translation app, since Québec’s language rules expect French to be available.
