What is Network & System Administration?

Network administration for Canadian offices: router, switch, firewall and SAN configuration with real-time bandwidth and latency tracking.

  • Discipline: IT Operations & Administration
  • Working term: Real time bandwidth and latency tracked on each link
  • Formats: ongoing monthly work or a single audit
  • Who you talk to: the senior lead, on every weekly call

The service

Our approach to
Network & System Administration

Keep your operational network fast, stable, and secure. We handle the provisioning, configuration, and round-the-clock monitoring of your critical networking components, including enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, and storage area networks (SAN). Our engineering team tracks bandwidth utilization and latency thresholds in real time, resolving network bottlenecks before they cause operational disruptions.

Common blockers

Where this kind of work usually gets stuck

Problems that show up again and again when we first look at an account. Our plan is built to deal with each one.

A slow network with no obvious cause

Staff say everything is slow, but nobody can tell whether it is the internet circuit, a switch port, the wireless or a backup job running at noon. Guessing can take days.

Configurations that live in one person's head

VLANs and firewall rules built up over years with no notes. When the one person who understands them is on holiday, even a small change feels risky.

Firewall rules nobody dares remove

Rules opened for a vendor or a project that ended long ago keep ports open. Each one is a door someone forgot to close.

Storage that fills up without warning

When a SAN volume runs out of space, the virtual machines and databases on it can stop. Growth is predictable if someone is watching it.

How we keep the work accountable

Before work starts, we agree on the number that matters most to you. Each sprint is planned against it. You get a short recorded update every week and a dashboard you can open any time, and the senior lead joins every call.

  • A senior lead runs your account from day one
  • A recorded walkthrough each week and a shared reporting dashboard
  • We work inside the tools and CMS your team already uses
  • Target ranges written into the agreement before we begin

Our Process

Four stages of Network & System Administration

The same order every time: find the constraint, plan, deliver, then review. Here is what each stage involves.

01

Map the network

We draw up your devices, links, VLANs, addressing and internet circuits, office by office, so everyone works from the same diagram.

02

Back up and document

Every device configuration is saved, and each firewall rule is recorded with its purpose and the person who asked for it.

03

Tune and tidy

Bottlenecks are fixed, outdated firmware is scheduled for update, and stale rules are removed once you have approved the list.

04

Watch and adjust

Bandwidth and latency are tracked in real time against agreed thresholds, and capacity is reviewed before links or storage run short.

01See where your bandwidth goes, as it happens

See where your bandwidth goes, as it happens

A complaint that "the network is slow" could come from a dozen places. We track utilization and latency on each link and interface in real time, so the cause shows up in the data. A common example is a nightly backup that drifted into business hours and now fills the connection between head office and a branch, right when staff join their video calls. Each link gets its own thresholds. When one is crossed, an engineer looks at it before your users notice.

  • Utilization and latency per link and interface
  • Thresholds set for each circuit
  • Heavy traffic traced to its source
  • Branch and home-office connections included
02Every change recorded, every configuration backed up
Configuration control

Every change recorded, every configuration backed up

Most network outages that follow a change trace back to an edit nobody wrote down. We save each router, switch and firewall configuration after every change and keep a log of who changed what and why. New equipment is set up from a standard template, so a switch in a Winnipeg branch is configured the same way as one in Mississauga. Firewall rules get a periodic review. Any rule without a current owner goes on a removal list, and nothing is taken out until you approve it.

  • Configuration backups after each change
  • A change log with the reason for every edit
  • Standard templates for new sites and devices
  • Firewall rule reviews with your sign-off
03Keep the SAN healthy well before it fills
Storage area networks

Keep the SAN healthy well before it fills

Shared storage carries the virtual machines, file shares and databases your business depends on, so its problems show up everywhere at once. We watch capacity and how quickly each volume is growing, the latency on each volume, and whether redundant paths between servers and storage are all working. When a volume is on course to run short, you hear about it with enough lead time to plan an expansion or a clean-up instead of reacting to an outage.

  • Capacity and growth tracked per volume
  • Latency watched where applications feel it
  • Redundant storage paths checked
  • Expansion planned ahead of the limit

FAQs

Before you sign: common questions

Straight answers on scope, timing and how we report.

Which network equipment do you manage?
Routers, switches, firewalls and storage area networks, along with the servers they connect. We handle provisioning, configuration and ongoing monitoring, and we keep a current record of how each piece is set up.
Can you take over a network someone else built?
Yes, and most engagements start that way. We map and document what exists before changing anything, so the first changes we make are ones we understand. Undocumented rules and settings are cleared up gradually, with your approval.
How are firewall changes handled?
Each request is reviewed, scheduled, applied and logged with its reason. The configuration is backed up afterwards. Rules are also reviewed from time to time, and any without a current purpose go to you for a decision before they are removed.
Can you set up the network for a new office?
Yes. Equipment is configured to the same standard as your other sites, connected back to head office and added to monitoring from the first day. We coordinate with your internet provider and with whoever is on site for the physical installation.
Do you need to be on site?
Rarely. Almost all administration is done through remote access that is set up with you, limited to what the work requires and logged. When something physical has to be done, we arrange it with your staff or your hardware supplier.
